What happens when two birthdays collide in Paris? You get Pink the Panther.
On 8 September 1925, Peter Sellers was born in Portsmouth. Forty-four years later, on 8 September 1979, Alecia Beth Moore — better known as Pink — was born in Pennsylvania.
That gives us a wonderfully simple Link Salad: Pink + Peter Sellers = Pink the Panther.
Peter Sellers became internationally famous as the magnificently incompetent French detective Inspector Jacques Clouseau in The Pink Panther films. The first film appeared in 1963, with Sellers’ Clouseau pursuing a jewel known as the Pink Panther. The animated feline originally appeared in the film’s opening titles and became such a star in his own right that he developed a life well beyond the films.
For today’s Link Salad, though, there’s a substitution.
Pink doesn’t meet the Pink Panther. Pink is the Panther.
Our image therefore puts the singer into the role of the elusive pink feline, while Sellers remains where he belongs: trench coat, magnifying glass and all, as the determined but accident-prone Inspector Clouseau. Paris provides the natural backdrop to the chase.
There’s another pleasing symmetry here. Both performers built careers around strong, instantly recognisable personas. Sellers was a master of disappearing into characters, voices and disguises; Pink built a pop identity around individuality, theatricality and a name that happens to be exactly the colour we need.
Two entertainers, born on the same calendar date, separated by 54 years.
One is Pink.
The other is Inspector Clouseau.
Put them together and, naturally, you get Pink the Panther.
